Why We Built NestTube

YouTube is incredible for kids — and terrifying for parents. Here's why we built a completely new way to let kids watch YouTube safely.

Why We Built NestTube

Why We Built NestTube

Every parent knows the feeling. Your child is watching an educational video about dinosaurs, and twenty minutes later, thanks to YouTube's autoplay algorithm, they're watching something completely inappropriate. You grab the tablet, close the app, and wonder: Is there really no better way to do this?

We asked ourselves the same question. And after trying every solution on the market, we realized the answer was no — so we built one.

The Problem with YouTube for Kids

YouTube is the world's largest library of educational content. Channels like Kurzgesagt, National Geographic Kids, Numberblocks, and SmarterEveryDay create incredible videos that genuinely help children learn. Blocking YouTube entirely means your kids miss out on all of this.

But YouTube wasn't designed for kids. Its recommendation algorithm is optimized for engagement — keeping viewers watching as long as possible. For children, this means a single tap can lead from a math lesson to an unboxing video to something far worse.

What We Tried (And Why It Failed)

YouTube Kids

YouTube Kids uses an algorithm to filter content. It's better than unrestricted YouTube, but it still surfaces inappropriate content regularly. Parents have limited control — you can't choose exactly which channels appear. You're trusting Google's algorithm to make the right calls, and it frequently doesn't.

Restricted Mode

YouTube's Restricted Mode is a blunt instrument. It blocks some mature content but misses a lot. It doesn't let parents choose specific channels. And kids can easily disable it.

Blocking YouTube Entirely

This is the nuclear option. It works for safety, but it throws out the baby with the bathwater. Your kids lose access to genuinely valuable educational content.

Third-Party Screen Time Apps

Apps like Bark, Qustodio, and Screen Time track usage and set time limits, but they don't solve the content problem. Your kids can still watch anything on YouTube — they just have less time to do it.

The Whitelist Approach

NestTube takes a fundamentally different approach. Instead of trying to filter out bad content (a blacklist), we only allow content you've explicitly approved (a whitelist).

Here's how it works:

  1. You block YouTube on your child's device using Screen Time or your router
  2. You install NestTube and whitelist specific YouTube channels
  3. Your child opens NestTube and sees only approved channels and their videos
  4. If they want a new channel, they send a request — you approve or deny it

The default state is "no access." Nothing gets through unless you say so. This is fundamentally safer than any filtering approach because there's nothing to filter — only what you've chosen.

Beyond Safety: Respecting Kids' Agency

We didn't just want to lock kids out of YouTube. We wanted to give them a better YouTube experience. That's why NestTube includes:

  • Channel requests: Kids can discover channels and ask to add them. This teaches them to communicate about what they want to watch rather than sneaking around restrictions.
  • Category organization: Channels are organized into categories like Education, Entertainment, and Music, so kids can browse by interest.
  • No algorithm: Videos appear in chronological order from whitelisted channels. No rabbit holes. No autoplay surprises.

Solo Mode: Not Just for Kids

While building NestTube for families, we realized adults need it too. Many of us are tired of YouTube's algorithm deciding what we watch. Solo Mode gives you a clean, chronological feed from channels you follow — no recommendations, no rabbit holes, no "up next" manipulation.

What's Next

NestTube is launching soon on iOS, with Android following shortly after. We're building this in public and listening to parents every step of the way.
